Wherever you wander, wherever you roam

Be happy and healthy and glad to be home.

We made it home yesterday after an epic 13 hour drive from Salt Lake City.

Snow! and fall color!

Mostly it was about getting home, seeing what the damage was, and giving Nat some relief.

But I can't leave out the sights between House on the Rock and Salt Lake City.

From Des Moines we went to Kansas City, via Excelsior Springs, home of the Hall of Waters.

What a fantastic deco building. You just kind of wander in, because it's mainly used as offices for the water district and a place to pay your bills. But if you make a right, you enter the actual hall

Yes, it does say hot and cold saline

The hall is gorgeous, with original tile and lighting fixtures.

They don't have any real plans for it at the moment, but it's being taken care of rather than falling to disrepair.

The rest of the town is so adorable, it's like the Gilmore Girls. Except perhaps a bit spookier. But as Frankie said, "If I were a ghost, I'd haunt the shit out of this place."

And speaking of ghosts, haunting and tours seem to be quite the cottage industry. Apparently Frankie's not the only one who would haunt the shit out of it. The Elms Hotel, where Truman famously held up the newspaper declaring his defeat, is a leader in this area. There are even sightings of a bellhop from the 20's who's known for helping the staff.

Kansas City is one of those places I really want to go back and revisit. There were so many things to see and just limited time - the Glore Psychiatric Museum, the Steamship Arabia, barbecue - a good few days could be spent easily.

One of the things we didn't miss, however, is Leilas Hair Museum, and I'm glad we didn't. It turned out to be absolutely fascinating.

Lots of memorial pieces, sure, but also watch chains, keepsakes, paintings with hair - just about anything you can imagine.

From KC, Iowa, we drove to Denver, which meant crossing Kansas.
Children of the corn

Not going to diss Kansas, but everything is true.

We spent the night in Denver, found a hipster cafe (Corvid Coffee), and visited a dispensary.

When in Rome...

I didn't buy anything, mainly because it was cash only, and lets face it, there's not shortage of people to get it from locally.

From Denver, it was on to Salt Lake City, via Dinosaur National Monument.

Frankie was a little excited

There is more I want to add, but I have to wrap this up. But I will say this - I've had a number of people ask "So, ready to do it again?" And I have to say yes - in a heartbeat. I want to see more places, talk to more people, discover more weird and wonderful things about the world. It's a big place. And sometimes, it's magic.
