Monterey Awesome! Mo Bitches, mo bettah

So today we left Santa Rosa and headed south to our darling niece/cousin who is putting us up for the night and joining us for our adventures.

Mo bitches = mo better

Especially with Frankie along. For example:

  • They do not (audibly) judge my driving, nor the comments I make about every other driver on the road (just so we're clear - none of them are as good as me)
  • When I break into California Here I Come as we cross the Golden Gate Bridge, there is no eye rolling, they just join in
  • When I say "Selfie!" they put up with it

On our way down, we definitely had to stop at the Pez Museum in Burlingame. I feel like the first stop kind of sets the tone for the trip. For years I hears about this place where they had Every Pez Ever Made. Kitchy, obsessive and niche. That is so weird I had to see it.

Yay! We look like shit!

So yes, it's tiny, but they do have every Pez, including Japanese gashapon, which are adorable, short, and only hold three Pez each.

Fun fact: Pez is Austrian, and the the first flavor was mint, or pfeffermintz. Haas, the inventor, took the p, e, and z from the word and voila! Pez.

They also have a fine collection of ray guns, other toys, "dangerous" toys (half of which we've owned) and miscellaneous ephemera. For a mere $5 the owner gives you a personal guided tour and answers any questions about the collection with which he is very proud.
Jar Jar steals a Pez WITH HIS TONGUE!
Why do I not have this?!?!
Curiously, his wife doesn't share his passion. She shuffles around the store, takes care of business, and keeps a grumpy eye out. Theres definitely a "Get off my lawn!" vibe emanating from her.

It's weird, dusty, vaguely uncomfortable, and awesome.

From there we drove down to my niece Brynna's pad in San Jose. She lives in the downtown area (handy to the convention center and various comicons). We talked about seeing some sights around town, but at that point in the afternoon, a lot of them are closed down (Beethoven's skull and hair, our meeting will have to be another day). We ended up staying in, napping, watching John Mulaney, and getting an early bed time (we had to get up at 6 to make the Pacific Lab Tour the next morning).

Not a bad start!
